I hate warm weather. I know the socially acceptable position is that hot, sunny weather is fun, but I personally hate it. Although actually I don’t think I’d mind just hot and sunny much. Here in the Netherlands it’s always (or at least always seems to be) hot, sunny, and humid. To me, that’s not a good combination.

I could take it if it were just the discomfort of the heat. Mind you, I wouldn’t enjoy it. But what really bugs me is what it does to me. It somehow manages to drain all my energy. Leaving me without as much vigour and drive as a damp cloth. The only thing I did manage to get done today was to set up my portable airco, which at least kept things somewhat bearable.

Since the prediction is for the next few days to be as warm, or warmer, I’m not looking forward to them. But at least now that I have the airco set up I should be able to start it earlier and (with luck) keep things a bit cooler.

And it’s not like I really did nothing today, I did a respectable amount of reading and even some editing. It just felt like I did nothing, and I guess I had to get that off my chest.

Oh my, so you too get hit by the heatwave. Here in the far east of Germany the temperatures have risen way above 30 degrees Celsius during the last three days and will do so for the rest of the week.
It’s not humid though, but the pressing heat is not really inviting me to do anything either. I can’t think, I don’t want to move and even eating doesn’t sound right (as it involves thinking – what to make – and moving – actually preparing the food -).
At least at work we can shade the windows and keep the heat at a bearable level, but only in the mornings. The afternoons are so hot that productive work is virtually impossible.

I’m pretty sure I know what you’re feeling. We had a bit of a heatwave when I was in Berlin last year, so I know what 30 degrees in the Eastern part of Germany feels like. Like you I should be okay at work, between shading the windows and having the airco on.

Here at home it’s a bit more difficult for me, though now that I have the airco set up it should be manageable. The main problem is that my windows face south-east. So I have sunlight coming in and warming things up from around 08:00 through to around 14:00. As a result my room tends to go over 30 degrees in sunny weather even if the temperature outside is only around 25 or 26 unless I take other measures.

Lucky you. My office doesn’t have airco (unless you count opening the windows and doors at the same times, hopig for some air movement).

My windows at home face south-west, so while I am fine in the morning, in the afternoon it gets HOT and only after the sun has set temperatures go down to a level that allow me to sleep.

While I enjoy warm weather (going outside, laying lazily on a beach towel in a park and reading), this heat is not comfortable at all. At least our office building has showers … talk about perfect working conditions ;)

The airco where I work isn’t great, but coupled with keeping the sun out helps keep things comfortable. Or at least less uncomfortable than they would otherwise be, when it gets as warm as it is now the airco we have is actually to weak to really beat down the heat.

Also, going back to your original comment on the food, I find I tend to virtually no cooking these days and mainly eat bread or cereals. I probably should try to find the time and energy today to turn the tomatoes I have lying around in to tomato salad. I can keep a decent amount of that in the fridge (thank the great maker for easily sealed plastic containers), and it’ll help me keep up the vitamins.

Oh, thanks for reminding me of my own stock of tomatoes. I guess it will be tomatoe salad tonight (and hopefully, for my colleagues, I can refrain from chopping in some garlic). If I have some toast around, I might even attempt to make “Bruschetta” … best thing in the world for a small snack after a hot day.

  7. Jarsto Says:

Hmm, maybe I should consider some bruschetta as well, though I find that regular (untoasted) baguette with a tomato salad topping also makes a nice “warm weather” option. For a luxury variation you can even crumble a little feta over the tomato salad.

It’s just after 8pm and I still don’t get a move on to make myself some dinner, it’s still too hot. Let’s see how it feels in one hour and if I am still awake enough to go through the process of making bruschetta ;)

Well if it makes you feel any better it’s 23:17 now, and I still haven’t gotten around to making that tomato salad. In fact it’s now on the list for tomorrow, though whether it will actually happen even then remains to be seen. The simple truth is that unless I absolutely have to do something chances of it getting done in this heat are slim.

Well, that makes two of us who didn’t have that salad last night. I just had some blueberries I had picked the day before and that was it :)
