Yes I know, I haven’t actually finished the re-design yet. For that matter I’m not at all certain the current code will survive, but I have got a testing version of the new layout up and running… more or less. Right now it’s got a hack to display right in IE6 and probably still needs one to work in IE7, but that can wait.

You can have a look at the testing version of the site now right here. The only thing not working in the testing version is the blog. And the front page content is currently identical to the My NaNo History page because I had to have a good amount of text in a hurry and that happened to be easily available. I guess I’m really going to have to figure out what the hell I want to do with the front page when I put this design up for real.

I’m also by no means certain about the current colour scheme, or for that matter anything beyond the basic layout. But having said that, it is a pretty fair test run for the basic layout. Oh and one more IE6 note: the on hover sub menu switching doesn’t work in IE6. I’m currently considering whether or not it’s going to be worth the effort of hacking in some javascript to get that to work. I have no particular sympathy for anyone using IE6 voluntarily, but many people are forced to use it at work (I should know, I’m one of them).

Count me in as one of those poor suckers who have to use this abomination of an internet browser at work as well :(

Anyway, about the new design: I like the new background and I think the white text works actually pretty well. But what sprang to my mind: How are you going to handle sub-categories, those beneath the second row that’s changing now when you hover over the first row? And what will you do when you run out of space on the top bar?

Sorry, just some thoughts from a very tired mind that is going to sleep now … the alarm clock will ring in six hours.

It’s morning now, but the fever I’d hoped to deal with last weekend has just arrived so I’m not 100% clear on this myself. Having said that I’ll proceed based on my best understanding of your questions at this time.

First as to the sub categories, they’re going to be linked on the actual pages, the menu itself isn’t going to move beyond two levels. At least that’s not my current design.

As for the top bar getting too full, I wish I had enough confidence in my production of content for the site to feel I had to worry about that. Should it happen however it can be dealt with by restructuring either just the menu or both the menu and the website.

I think that’s what you meant, if it isn’t please let me know.

Wow, when I have a fever I can’t usually answer questions as well as you do ;) That was exactly what I was wondering.
Anyway, I hope that you well get better – I mean: really well – now that your long awaited fever has finally hit you. I myself am fighting a slight cold right now … that’s what you get when you open all windows and doors on the floor to make the air move at least slightly (and then don’t notice that it actually makes you sick).
    Best wishes!

Well that was one of my more lucid moments during the fever. I actually spent a lot of yesterday either asleep or half asleep. But the good news is that the fever broke last night, and for the first time in what seems like a week or more my temperature is actually completely normal this morning (it’s been consistently high, but not actual fever for a while now).

I hope you get over your cold soon!

Glad to hear you are better!

I myself am ok; I drank about three liters of hot tea, ate half a glass of honey and wrapped myself up in a blanket. Not the most comfortable experience, but it was improved by watching Casino Royale again ;)
