I took these photos in Workum, here in the Netherlands, where my father lives in August of 2007. For a couple of years ring rijden (ring riding) had been an anual event there. Horse drawn wagons and carriages, some complete with people in period dress, compete with each other. The goal is to go down the street at a good pace (judges are present to subtract points if a minimum speed is not maintained) and spear the rings set up at intervals along the street.

One of my photos actually captured an attempt to take a ring, but I mainly focused on the horses, and carriages (one time so much I cut off the heads of the people in the carriage). The horses especially were a challenge. When they’re moving at a good pace the speed of the carriage is enough to make it hard to capture, but aside from going at a good speed the horse is also moving to achieve that speed.
